Crown & Balance — Frequently Asked Questions

What does a standard watch service include?

A standard mechanical watch service typically includes complete movement disassembly, ultrasonic cleaning of movement components, inspection for worn or damaged parts, fresh lubrication with professional-grade watch oils, timing adjustment, and reassembly. The case, crystal, crown, and gaskets are also inspected during the evaluation process.

How often should I have my watch serviced?

Most mechanical watches benefit from professional servicing every 5 to 7 years, depending on age, usage, and environmental exposure. Vintage watches, frequently worn watches, and heirloom pieces may require more frequent inspection.

How long does watch servicing usually take?

Industry-standard turnaround for a full service is typically 2 to 6 weeks depending on the watch type, movement complexity, parts availability, and current shop workload. More involved restorations or vintage part sourcing may take longer.

Do you service vintage watches?

Yes. Crown & Balance specializes in vintage mechanical wristwatches and pocket watches. Vintage pieces often require extra care because of fragile components, prior repairs, or limited parts availability.

Do you service quartz watches?

Yes. Quartz service may include battery replacement, movement testing, electrical contact cleaning, gasket inspection, and replacement of worn movement components when available.

Will my watch be polished during service?

Polishing is not included. Many collectors prefer to preserve original case lines and factory finishing. We are not equipped to offer polishing or case/band refinishing at this time.

Do you pressure test water-resistant watches?

If a watch is designed for water resistance, gasket condition will be evaluated. Pressure testing may be available depending on the watch type and case condition. Vintage watches are generally not recommended for water exposure, even after service.

What if my watch needs replacement parts?

If worn or damaged parts are discovered during inspection, Crown & Balance will contact you before additional work is performed. No major repair work is completed without approval.

Is there an evaluation or bench fee?

Yes. A $35 bench fee applies to watches submitted for inspection, diagnosis, or estimate preparation. This covers initial evaluation time and professional assessment. The bench fee is typically applied toward approved repair work when service proceeds.

Do you offer estimates before beginning work?

Yes. After inspection, you will receive a service recommendation and estimate whenever additional work beyond routine servicing is needed.

How should I ship my watch for service?

For safe shipping, industry-standard recommendations are:

  • Secure the watch so it cannot move inside the package.

  • Wrap the watch in soft protective material such as bubble wrap.

  • Use a sturdy cardboard box rather than an envelope.

  • Do not send presentation boxes, sentimental packaging, or unnecessary accessories unless requested.

  • Include your contact information and a brief description of the service requested.

  • Use a tracked and insured shipping method whenever possible.

Is shipping safe?

Yes. Mail-in watch service is common throughout the industry. Proper packaging, tracking, and insurance significantly reduce shipping risk.

Do you offer local service in Albuquerque?

Yes. Crown & Balance offers local service in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Local clients may have the option of pickup or direct drop-off arrangements depending on availability.

Can local customers still use the mail-in service?

Absolutely. Even if you are local, the mail-in option remains available if it is more convenient.

Will I be contacted before work begins?

Yes. If anything outside of routine servicing is found during inspection, approval is requested before additional work is performed.

Do you guarantee your work?

Service workmanship is backed by Crown & Balance. Specific warranty terms may vary depending on the age of the watch, condition of the movement, prior damage, and the nature of the repair.
